READ THIS FIRST!

Welcome to The Language Lounge!
This is a public blog that has resources for learning languages online with (mostly) free sites, videos, etc. There are entries for many different languages and there are many links and recommendations for self-learners.

The entries below are in no sort of logical order, so I recommend you look to the blog-archive to the right of the page and find a starting point. The first entry for each language is always titled "[Language name] - Start Here"

FIRST! Check the entry titled "Tips and Tricks (For Self-Study)" because this has some "pre-study" tips for you.

SECOND! Read the "All Languages - Must Read" entry because it has really nice resources for any language.

Enjoy!

ALL LANGUAGES -- MUST READ

Okay, there are some resources that help ALL language learners. These are either programs, websites, whatever. Please check these out because they are all free! So even if you decide they suck you won't lose any money.

◍ WIKIBOOKS!!! → http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page
   - Looking for a free language textbook online? Here ya go!
   - Just search for the language you want and there should be an awesome page all for that language. There are usually little links leading to each lesson.

◍ Anki → http://ankisrs.net/
   - One of the greatest things ever (not only for languages, but for every subject)
   - Flashcard program that WORKS
   - You select if a card was "Hard," "Good," "Easy," or "Very Easy" and depending on your answer the program waits a certain length of time before it shows you the card again. This way it slowly narrows the cards down to only the ones you need to practice
   - Make your own decks or download ones that other people have made and shared
   - You can also get this on your phone for flashcarding on the go! (on some phones you have to pay...)

◍ A must for any linguaholic!! → http://www.omniglot.com/
   - Mainly writing systems of the world
   - A cool place to learn a little about obscure languages

◍ BYKI → http://www.byki.com/
   - A free download for a flashcard-based program for learning languages
   - A native speakers reads all the cards out loud to you
   - Personally, I HATE programs lie Rosetta Stone and stuff because all they are good for is listening practice. Just like Rosetta Stone, BYKI is in no way comprehensive. BUT! This program is FREE and it can help with listening skills and vocab drills.
